WEHO Sheriff's Station

Finding a paying job has been impossible even though I know how to do a lot of things, so I'm volunteering.

I work a shift at Cedars Sinai which is pretty boring with no patient interaction. For example, last week I escorted a few family members to post-op. I got some paper towels for the men's room. And I read the entire New Yorker.

I'm on the wait list for the ER which should be much more interesting. I've been told I'll be walking 5 miles in a 4 hour shift there with no sitting down, dealing with any situation that comes in the door.

Cedars has over 2000 volunteers ranging from high school kids to seniors in their 90s. Before this I worked as a Volunteer at UCLA. Getting vetted for these hospital jobs involves a background check, finger printing, immunizations and tests for various diseases, and taking quizzes. For example, I now know what to do if somebody is stealing a baby, or entering the hospital brandishing a firearm.

As Cedars is a Jewish hospital it could be a target for terrorists. I haven't seen anything suspicious but a female volunteer with a headscarf walked by the other day. Thi what with everything going on in the Middle East. We've been warned about this. Last week a volunteer with a headscarf walked by. This upset my co-worker a lot and she went down to the volunteer office to complain. She was told that Cedars does not discriminate.

I walk dogs for the Amanda Foundation in Beverly Hills. I can walk as many dogs as I want except the big dogs with warning signs on their cages. The minute I get there the dogs go crazy wanting me to choose them. The barking is at very high decibel levels. I wish I could take them all home. Adoptable dogs are selected from shelters around L.A. They are housed at Dr. Shipp's animal hospital on Foothill Drive. While they wait to find homes, I feel good about taking them outdoors. I already have two dogs or I'd adopt one, but never say never. The foundation also has a Spaymobile which provides free spaying and neutering in the poorer areas of Los Angeles.

Tonight is my interview at the W. Hollywood Sheriff's Station. They do a background check too.  I've been told I'll be issued a bullet proof vest for patrols. Last week somebody drove into the parking lot and committed suicide. We've got Russian gang activity. Then there's the Halloween Parade coming up. I think this job should be interesting and fun.
